Bench
Concept
The bench mentioned in Ezekiel 27:6 refers to the deck or thwarts of Tyrian ships—described as made of cypress (ashurim) from the islands of Kittim, inlaid with ivory. The image occurs in Ezekiel's elaborate lament over Tyre, which he portrays as a great merchant ship perfectly built from the finest materials of every nation. The bench or deck is one detail in this extended metaphor of maritime commerce and coming destruction.
