Berea

Berea (meaning heavy or well-watered) was a city of Macedonia, modern Veria, located about forty miles southwest of Thessalonica. Paul and Silas fled there after being driven from Thessalonica (Acts 17:10). The Bereans received the gospel with exceptional eagerness, searching the Scriptures daily to verify what Paul taught—earning them the reputation as more noble than the Thessalonians (Acts 17:11). When Jews from Thessalonica stirred up trouble there as well, Paul departed by sea while Silas and Timothy remained. Sopater of Berea was among those who accompanied Paul on his final journey to Jerusalem (Acts 20:4).
