Berechiah

Person

Berechiah (meaning blessed by Jehovah) is the name of six men in the Old Testament. (1.) The son of Shimea and father of Asaph the musician (1 Chronicles 6:39). (2.) A Levite musician who assisted in bringing the ark to Jerusalem (1 Chronicles 15:17, 23). (3.) An Ephraimite leader who insisted on releasing Judean prisoners taken by Pekah king of Israel (2 Chronicles 28:12). (4.) A son of Zerubbabel (1 Chronicles 3:20). (5.) A Levite who settled in Jerusalem after the exile (1 Chronicles 9:16). (6.) The father of Zechariah the prophet (Zechariah 1:1, 7; Matthew 23:35), making Berechiah the grandfather of Zechariah the son of Jehoiada—though some textual questions exist in Matthew's attribution.
