Bered

Bered (meaning: hail) is a name shared by a place and a person in the Old Testament. As a place, Bered was a town in the south of Palestine in the desert of Shur, near the well Lahai-roi where the angel of the Lord appeared to Hagar. It lay along the ancient caravan route between Canaan and Egypt, in the region traversed by Abraham and later by Isaac.

As a person, Bered was a son of Shuthelah and grandson of Ephraim, listed in the tribal genealogy of 1 Chronicles 7. His line was among those born to Ephraim after the grief of losing sons to the men of Gath who raided their livestock; Ephraim mourned them many days, and his brethren came to comfort him. Bered thus belongs to the generation of Ephraimites who resettled and rebuilt the tribe's presence in Canaan after early losses.
