Bigtha

Bigtha (meaning: garden or gift of fortune) was one of the seven eunuchs or chamberlains who served in the court of King Ahasuerus of Persia and had charge of the royal harem. He is named in Esther 1:10 alongside Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcas as among those commanded by the king to bring Queen Vashti before the royal banquet to display her beauty to the assembled princes and nobles of the Persian empire.

When Vashti refused the royal summons, the sequence of events began that would lead to Esther's elevation as queen and ultimately to the deliverance of the Jewish people from Haman's plot. Bigtha's role in this narrative is minimal—a functionary executing the royal command that Vashti then refused—but his position as a named royal chamberlain reflects the detailed court setting within which the book of Esther unfolds its drama of providential deliverance. The naming of all seven chamberlains adds historical specificity to the Persian court background of the narrative.
