Bucket appears in only two biblical passages and in both cases carries figurative rather than literal weight. Isaiah 40:15 declares that the nations are “like a drop from a bucket” before God, a striking image of the utter disproportion between the greatest human powers and the sovereign Creator. Numbers 24:7 is part of Balaam's oracle over Israel: “Water shall flow from his buckets, and his seed shall be in many waters”—an image of abundance and far-reaching influence that several ancient interpreters read as a messianic prophecy.

The Hebrew deli designates the vessel used to draw water from a well, one of the most basic tools of daily life in an arid land where every drop was precious. The contrast in Isaiah 40:15 between this humble household object and the vast weight of the nations is deliberately deflationary, designed to relativize all human political power before the incomparable majesty of the Creator. The rhetorical move from the cosmic to the domestic and back is characteristic of Deutero-Isaiah's strategy of reorienting a defeated people toward the sovereignty of their God.
