Cainan

Cainan (meaning possessor or purchaser) is the name of two men in Scripture. (1.) A son of Enosh and grandson of Seth, listed in the antediluvian genealogy of Genesis 5:9–14. He lived 910 years and was the father of Mahalaleel. He appears in Luke's genealogy of Jesus (Luke 3:37). (2.) A son of Arphaxad and grandson of Shem, listed in the Septuagint version of Genesis 10:24 and 11:12–13 and in Luke 3:36, though he is absent from the standard Hebrew (Masoretic) text of the genealogy. The inclusion of this second Cainan in Luke has generated significant discussion among textual scholars regarding the Septuagint tradition underlying Luke's genealogy.
