Carnal

Carnal (from Latin caro, flesh) is the theological term used in the King James Version to translate the Greek sarkikos and sarkinos, both derived from sarx (flesh). In Paul's letters, the carnal mind or fleshly orientation is set in direct opposition to the spiritual: "the carnal mind is enmity against God" (Romans 8:7), incapable of submitting to God's law and producing death (Romans 8:6). Paul rebukes the Corinthians for carnal behavior manifested in their party divisions and jealousy (1 Corinthians 3:3–4). The distinction between carnal and spiritual is not simply physical versus immaterial, but rather an orientation toward self and sin as opposed to God and righteousness. Carnal things (sarkika) include earthly material provisions given in exchange for spiritual ministry (Romans 15:27; 1 Corinthians 9:11).
