Castaway translates the Greek adokimos (rejected, disqualified, or failing the test) in 1 Corinthians 9:27, where Paul employs the metaphor of an athletic contest to describe his rigorous self-discipline: "I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified." The term denotes one who fails to meet the required standard and is excluded from the prize — not necessarily implying final damnation, but the possibility of ministerial failure and loss of reward through moral self-indulgence. The same word is used in 2 Timothy 3:8 of those who are "reprobate concerning the faith" and in Hebrews 6:8 of land bearing thorns that is "rejected" and near to a curse.
