Causeway

Causeway in Scripture (Hebrew mesillah, a raised way or highway) refers to a paved or elevated road built for processional or military purposes. The two references in 1 Chronicles 26:16, 18 describe the divisions of the temple gatekeepers stationed at the causeway of the ascent, a raised approach road to the temple on the south side. In 2 Chronicles 9:11, King Solomon used the algum timber from Lebanon to construct stairways (causeways) for the temple and palace and to make harps and lyres. The concept of the prepared highway or causeway is also used figuratively in Isaiah, where the return from exile is described as a "way" or highway prepared through the wilderness (Isaiah 40:3; 62:10).
