Cellar

Cellars in the Old Testament referred to underground storage chambers for wine, oil, and provisions. David's administrative organization included officers over the cellars (storehouses) of wine and oil (1 Chronicles 27:27–28), reflecting a sophisticated system of royal supply management. The word in Joel 1:17 describes granary storage pits that lie empty and in ruin as a result of the locust plague — a vivid image of agricultural catastrophe. In 1 Kings 7:51, the treasuries of the temple (often translated as storerooms or cellars) held the dedicated silver and gold of David awaiting the temple's completion. These storage facilities were essential to the economic administration of both palace and temple.
