Chamber

Chamber in biblical usage refers to any enclosed room within a house, palace, or temple complex. The Shunammite woman's preparation of a small chamber on the wall of her house for Elisha — furnished with a bed, table, chair, and lamp — illustrates the private guest accommodation of the period (2 Kgs. 4:10). The upper chamber or upper room (Greek anagaion) is the setting for the Last Supper (Mark 14:14–15; Luke 22:11–12) and for the assembly of disciples at Pentecost (Acts 1:13; 2:1). Royal palaces contained numerous specialized chambers for private audiences, guard duty, and storage (1 Kgs. 22:25; 2 Kgs. 9:2). The temple included side chambers (1 Kgs. 6:5–10) and treasury rooms, as well as the inner chambers associated with the priests' service (Ezek. 40–42).
