Chapel
Concept
Chapel translates the Hebrew miqdash (sanctuary) in its only New Testament occurrence at Amos 7:13, where the priest Amaziah of Bethel warns Amos: do not prophesy again at Bethel, for it is the king's sanctuary (chapel) and it is a royal house. The term underscores the political dimension of the Bethel shrine — it was not merely a place of worship but an instrument of royal ideology under Jeroboam II, which explains Amaziah's hostility to Amos's prophetic challenge. The irony of calling an idolatrous northern shrine a sanctuary would not have been lost on Amos's audience.
