Charger

A charger in the Old Testament is a large, wide bowl or deep dish used for offerings or feasting. The silver chargers (basins) given by the heads of the twelve tribes at the dedication of the tabernacle were each weighing a hundred and thirty shekels of silver (Num. 7:13–85). In the New Testament, the charger appears in the account of Salome's request for the head of John the Baptist to be presented to her on a charger (platter), a detail that both Matthew (14:8, 11) and Mark (6:25, 28) record. This New Testament usage reflects a dining vessel — a large serving plate — rather than the ceremonial dish of the Old Testament.
