Charles Ellicott

Charles John Ellicott (1819–1905), bishop of Gloucester and Bristol, was a leading Anglican biblical scholar of the Victorian era. He is best known as the general editor of Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers (1878–1884), an eight-volume work covering all sixty-six books of the Bible, with contributions from some of the finest English-language scholars of his generation. Ellicott himself wrote the volumes on the Pauline epistles and Galatians, and his notes are notable for their close attention to the Greek text, their lucid English style, and their engagement with contemporary German scholarship. He also served as chairman of the New Testament Revision Committee that produced the Revised Version of 1881. His commentary entered the public domain and remains a standard Anglican evangelical reference work.
