Charran

Charran is the New Testament Greek form (Acts 7:2, 4) of Haran, the city in northwestern Mesopotamia (modern southeastern Turkey) where Terah halted with Abraham, Lot, and Sarai on their journey from Ur of the Chaldees toward Canaan, and where Terah died at the age of two hundred and five (Gen. 11:31–32). Stephen's speech to the Sanhedrin (Acts 7) references Charran as the intermediate stopping point of Abraham's call before his entry into Canaan. The city lay on major trade routes and had a significant Mesopotamian moon-cult presence. Abraham later sent his servant back to the region of Charran to find a wife for Isaac (Gen. 24:4, 10).
