Chenaiah
Person
Chenaiah (meaning whom Jehovah hath made) was a Levite described as the chief of the Levites responsible for the musical service when David organized the transport of the ark of the covenant to Jerusalem (1 Chr. 15:22). He was appointed to instruct the singers in song because he was skillful, indicating an expert musicianship recognized among his contemporaries. He may have been a Kohathite Levite of the house of Izhar or Hebron. Chenaiah's appointment reflects David's careful organization of Levitical ministry in preparation for the permanent establishment of worship in Jerusalem before the temple was built.
