Cherith

Cherith (meaning a cutting or gorge) was a wadi or seasonal stream-bed east of the Jordan at which Elijah hid and was miraculously sustained during the drought he had announced to King Ahab (1 Kgs. 17:3–7). By divine command, ravens brought Elijah bread and meat morning and evening, and he drank from the brook until it dried up because of the drought. The Cherith episode is the first in a sequence of miracles that sustained Elijah through the three-and-a-half-year famine, continuing with the widow of Zarephath's inexhaustible flour and oil. Its location east of the Jordan has been debated; several wadis in the Transjordanian highlands have been proposed.
