Chesil

Chesil (meaning ungodly or foolishness) was a town in the extreme south of Judah, mentioned in Joshua 15:30 in the list of Judah's southern boundary cities. It is very probably the same place as Bethul (Josh. 19:4) and Bethuel (1 Chr. 4:30) assigned to Simeon, as those tribes' territories overlapped in the south. Some scholars also identify it with Bethlehem (of the south), distinguished from Bethlehem of Judah. The town's location in the Negev placed it on the southern frontier of Israelite settlement.
