Chezib

Place

Chezib (meaning deceitful) was the town where Shelah, the third son of Judah by his Canaanite wife the daughter of Shua, was born (Gen. 38:5). The name is likely the same place as Achzib (Josh. 15:44; Mic. 1:14) and Chozeba (1 Chr. 4:22), all located in the Shephelah of Judah. The irony of the name deceitful at the birth of Shelah, in the context of Judah's relationship with Tamar involving multiple acts of deception, may be a deliberate narrative touch by the author of Genesis 38.
