Chinnereth

Chinnereth (meaning lyre, from the harp-like shape of the lake) is the Old Testament name for what the New Testament calls the Sea of Galilee. It appears as a geographical designation for the lake itself (Deut. 3:17; Josh. 13:27; Num. 34:11) and also as the name of a fortified city on the northwestern shore of the lake (Josh. 19:35; 1 Kgs. 15:20). The lake was also called the Sea of Chinneroth (Josh. 12:3) and in later periods the Sea of Gennesaret (Luke 5:1) and the Sea of Tiberias (John 6:1; 21:1). Its shores became the primary setting of Jesus's ministry in Galilee, where he called his first disciples, calmed storms, and multiplied bread and fish for the multitudes.
