Claudia

Claudia was a Christian woman mentioned in 2 Timothy 4:21 as one of several believers who sent greetings to Timothy from Rome. She is named alongside Pudens, Linus, and others in what appears to be a small Roman Christian community in contact with Paul during his final imprisonment. Beyond this single reference, nothing certain is known of her identity or background.

Early tradition, preserved in later sources, speculatively identified Claudia as a British woman of noble birth — possibly connected with the Roman aristocracy — who had converted to Christianity. This identification, promoted by writers such as Martial who mentions a Claudia Rufina of British origin, cannot be confirmed from Scripture. Her Hitchcock name meaning of lame reflects the Latin etymology of the Claudian family name. What Scripture preserves is simply that she was a known and valued member of the Roman church who joined in the apostolic correspondence to Timothy during Paul's final days.
