Closet

The closet in biblical usage refers to an inner or private room, often used for personal retirement and prayer. The Greek word tameion (translated as closet or inner chamber) denotes a storeroom or private space within a house. Jesus employs this image in Matthew 6:6, instructing his disciples to pray in the closet with the door shut — contrasting sincere, private communion with God against the ostentatious public prayers of the hypocrites.

In Luke 12:3, Jesus uses the closet (inner chamber) to describe the secrecy in which things are whispered, warning that what is spoken in private will be proclaimed from the housetops. The image captures the Palestinian house design where interior rooms were screened from public view. The closet thus functions in Jesus's teaching as a symbol of authentic interiority — the hidden life before God that is the true measure of spiritual devotion, invisible to human observers but transparent to the Father who sees in secret and rewards openly.
