Cyprian of Carthage

Cyprian (c. 210–258), bishop of Carthage and martyr under the emperor Valerian, shaped the early Latin church’s thought on unity, ministry, and the restoration of the lapsed. His treatise On the Unity of the Catholic Church remained a touchstone of ecclesiology.

Cyprian's pastoral writings, shaped by the persecutions he lived through, gave the Latin church enduring language for the church's unity, the dignity of ministry, and the discipline of restoring those who had lapsed under pressure. His treatise On the Lord's Prayer is among the earliest expositions of that prayer, and his witness ended in martyrdom under Valerian in 258.
