Dathan

Dathan (meaning laws or rites) was a Reubenite, son of Eliab, who joined the rebellion of Korah the Levite against the authority of Moses and Aaron in the wilderness (Numbers 16:1–35). Together with his brother Abiram, On son of Peleth, and the Levite Korah, he challenged Moses's exclusive leadership, claiming that all the congregation was holy and that Moses had exalted himself above the assembly. God's judgment was swift: the earth opened and swallowed Dathan, Abiram, and their households, and fire consumed the 250 men who had offered incense. The event is invoked as a warning against rebellion in Deuteronomy 11:6, Psalm 106:17, and as a type of destruction for the ungodly in later tradition.
