Daughter

Daughter in Scripture carries both its literal meaning of a female offspring and several extended uses. "Daughter of Zion" and "daughter of Jerusalem" are poetic personifications of the city and its people (Isaiah 3:16; 10:32; Micah 4:8), expressing tender relationship and sometimes reproach. "Daughters of men" in Genesis 6:2 designates a group whose identity has been debated throughout church history. The phrase "daughter of Abraham" (Luke 13:16) affirms a woman's full covenant membership. In wisdom literature, a daughter's character reflects on the household (Sirach 42:9–11). The legal status of daughters in Israelite law included rights of inheritance when no sons survived (Numbers 27:1–11; 36:1–12), a provision that Zelophehad's daughters successfully petitioned Moses to establish.
