Dedan

Person Name

Name meaning: "their breasts; friendship; a judge"

Dedan (meaning their breasts, friendship, or a judge) is the name of two persons and the people descended from them. (1.) A son of Raamah and grandson of Cush (son of Ham), whose descendants became a north Arabian tribe (Genesis 10:7; 1 Chronicles 1:9). (2.) A son of Jokshan and grandson of Abraham by Keturah (Genesis 25:3; 1 Chronicles 1:32). The Dedanites appear in the prophetic writings as traders operating in the northwest Arabian Peninsula, trading with Tyre in saddlecloths for riding (Ezekiel 27:15, 20) and in Isaiah 21:13 as a caravan encamping in the Arabian desert. Jeremiah and Ezekiel include them in oracles against Arabia and Edom (Jeremiah 25:23; 49:8; Ezekiel 25:13).
