Delaiah

Delaiah (meaning the poor of the Lord or freed by the Lord) is the name of several men in the Old Testament. (1.) A priest to whom the twenty-third division of temple service was assigned in the time of David (1 Chronicles 24:18). (2.) A prince who interceded unsuccessfully with Jehoiakim not to burn Jeremiah's scroll (Jeremiah 36:12, 25). (3.) One whose descendants returned from Babylonian exile with Zerubbabel but could not prove their Israelite ancestry (Ezra 2:60; Nehemiah 7:62). (4.) The father of Shemaiah, a false prophet who tried to intimidate Nehemiah (Nehemiah 6:10). The name was common enough that at least four distinct individuals bore it in the Old Testament period.
