Demetrius

Demetrius (meaning belonging to Ceres, the goddess of grain) is the name of two men in the New Testament. (1.) A silversmith at Ephesus who made silver shrines of the goddess Artemis and led the riot against Paul, fearing that Paul's preaching about idols made with hands would destroy his profitable trade and dishonor the great goddess (Acts 19:24–40). The riot filled the theater with thousands crying out for Artemis until the city clerk quieted them. (2.) A believer commended by the apostle John as having a good testimony from everyone, from the truth itself, and from John and his companions (3 John 1:12). Whether he was the bearer of John's third epistle is uncertain but plausible.
