Deputy

Deputy in the Old Testament translates Hebrew terms for viceroy, governor, or regional administrator acting on behalf of a higher authority. The "deputy" who governed Edom during a period of Judah's dominance (1 Kings 22:47) was a vassal regent. Solomon's twelve deputies administered the regions of Israel, each responsible for provisioning the royal household for one month of the year (1 Kings 4:5, 7–19). In the New Testament, the Greek anthypatos (proconsul) is rendered "deputy" in the KJV (Acts 13:7–8, 12; 18:12; 19:38), designating the Roman senatorial governor of a province. The proconsul Sergius Paulus of Cyprus became a believer after witnessing Paul's confrontation with Bar-Jesus the sorcerer (Acts 13:12).
