Derbe

Derbe (meaning a sting) was a city in the southeastern region of Lycaonia in Asia Minor (modern Turkey), part of the Roman province of Galatia. Paul and Barnabas visited it on the first missionary journey after being driven from Lystra by Jews from Antioch and Iconium (Acts 14:20–21), and Paul passed through it again on his second journey (Acts 16:1). The city was the home of Gaius, one of Paul's traveling companions (Acts 20:4). An inscription discovered in the mid-twentieth century at Kerti Hüyük near Karaman has helped confirm the probable location of Derbe. Unlike at Lystra, where Paul was stoned, his time at Derbe appears to have been productive and peaceful, resulting in the discipling of "many."
