Desert

Desert in Scripture encompasses both literally arid, uninhabited wilderness regions and a theologically charged space of encounter with God. The Hebrew terms include midbar (uninhabited land, often pastured), arabah (the Jordan-Rift Valley desert plain), and yeshimon (desolation). Israel's forty years of wilderness wandering in the midbar were a formative period of both divine provision and testing: manna, water from rock, and the pillar of cloud and fire all accompanied the nation through the desert. The prophets anticipated a new exodus through a desert highway (Isaiah 40:3; 43:19–20), a vision fulfilled in John the Baptist's ministry "in the wilderness" (Matthew 3:1–3; Mark 1:3–4). Jesus himself was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted (Matthew 4:1), and Paul spent time in Arabia after his conversion (Galatians 1:17).
