Destruction

Destruction in the Old Testament (Hebrew Abaddon and sheol) refers to the underworld realm of the dead, often used as a synonym or parallel for Sheol. Job speaks of "Destruction" (Abaddon) as having no covering before God (Job 26:6; 28:22), and it is personified alongside Death as a witness to human folly. Abaddon appears in Revelation 9:11 as the name of the angel of the bottomless pit — in Hebrew Abaddon, in Greek Apollyon (Destroyer) — designating a demonic ruler over the realm of destruction. In the New Testament, destruction (apoleia) also designates eternal perdition, the final state of the lost (Matthew 7:13; Philippians 3:19; 2 Peter 3:7), as opposed to life and salvation.
