Dish

Dish designates various vessels used for serving food in both domestic and sacred contexts in Scripture. In the tabernacle, golden dishes (qᵊśāwōt) were placed on the table of showbread alongside plates, flagons, and bowls (Exod. 25:29; 37:16). In Judges 5:25, Jael brought curds to Sisera in a "lordly dish"—a magnificent bowl—as part of the account of his assassination. Gideon placed meat in a basket with broth poured into a dish for the angel at the oak of Ophrah (Judg. 6:38).

In the New Testament, Jesus's statement at the Last Supper—"He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me will betray me" (Matt. 26:23)—refers to the common bowl from which bread was dipped in sauce or olive oil at the communal meal. Second Kings 21:13 uses the image of Jerusalem being wiped as one wipes a dish—turning it upside down and wiping it clean—as a metaphor for the totality of divine judgment upon the city.
