Dodai

Dodai the Ahohite was a military officer during the reign of David, named as commander of the division of twenty-four thousand men assigned to service in the second month of David's rotating military organization (1 Chr. 27:4). He is most likely the same person as Dodo the Ahohite (1 Chr. 11:12; 2 Sam. 23:9), the father of Eleazar—one of David's three greatest warriors. The name variation (Dodai/Dodo) is a minor textual variant between the Chronicles military list and the narrative accounts.

Eleazar son of Dodo performed one of the most celebrated acts of valor among the Thirty, holding his ground alone against the Philistines at Pas-dammim after the other Israelites had retreated, fighting until his hand was too exhausted to release the sword (2 Sam. 23:9–10). David and the people attributed the victory to the LORD. Dodai's family thus contributed both administrative service and legendary military achievement to David's kingdom.
