Dross

Dross refers to the impurities and waste material separated from silver or other metals during the smelting and refining process—the slag and base elements that rise to the surface or are drawn off when heat is applied to ore. In Scripture, dross functions as a consistent metaphor for moral corruption and the worthless elements within a society or individual that divine judgment is designed to remove. Proverbs 25:4 states the principle: "Take away the dross from the silver, and the smith has material for a vessel."

Isaiah 1:22 laments Jerusalem's condition: "Your silver has become dross, your best wine mixed with water"—describing a society corrupted at its core. Isaiah 1:25 then announces God's redemptive response: "I will turn my hand against you and will smelt away your dross as with lye and remove all your alloy." Psalm 119:119 declares that God puts away "all the wicked of the earth like dross." Ezekiel 22:18–22 develops the extended metaphor of Israel as dross in the furnace of Jerusalem, which God will heat to purify. Malachi 3:2–3 uses the refiner's fire and fuller's soap as images of the purifying work of the coming messenger.
