Eber

Eber (meaning one that passes or the region beyond) was the third post-diluvian patriarch after Shem in the Shemite genealogy (Genesis 10:24; 11:14–17). He was the great-grandson of Shem and the ancestor of the Hebrews, from whose name (ibri) the designation "Hebrew" is traditionally derived. Eber's son Peleg was born "in his days the earth was divided" (Genesis 10:25), a phrase interpreted variously as referring to the division of the nations at Babel or to a geographical division of lands.

Eber lived 464 years according to the Masoretic text — longer than his ancestors after the flood — and is mentioned in Luke 3:35 in the genealogy of Jesus. The term "Hebrews" as the ethnic name for Abraham's descendants is likely connected to Eber as the ancestral eponym, though some scholars also connect it to the Habiru/Apiru peoples attested in ancient Near Eastern texts. Numbers 24:24 contains Balaam's oracle that ships from Kittim would afflict Asshur and Eber.
