Edrei

Edrei (meaning mighty or strength) is the name of two places in the Old Testament. The more significant is one of the chief cities of the kingdom of Bashan, east of the Jordan in the territory of Og, where Moses and the Israelites defeated Og in battle (Numbers 21:33; Deuteronomy 3:1). This was a pivotal victory that opened the Transjordan region to Israel and demonstrated that even the giant Rephaim kings were no match for the LORD's power. Edrei has been identified with the modern site of Der'a in southern Syria.

A second Edrei appears as a city in the territory allotted to Naphtali (Joshua 19:37). The Bashan Edrei is the more historically significant, as the defeat of Og at Edrei became a standard reference point in Israel's recollection of the conquest (Deuteronomy 3:10; Joshua 12:4; 13:12), affirming God's faithfulness to give Israel the land he had promised.
