Elisabeth
Name meaning: "the oath, or fullness, of God"
Elisabeth (also spelled Elizabeth) was a descendant of the priestly family of Aaron, wife of the priest Zacharias, and mother of John the Baptist. Her name, meaning God is my oath or consecrated to God, reflects her devout character. Luke's Gospel describes her as righteous before God, blameless in her observance of the Law, yet long barren—a condition that carried social stigma in ancient Israel.
Her miraculous conception of John in old age, announced by the angel Gabriel, parallels the stories of Sarah and Hannah. When her kinswoman Mary visited bearing the news of her own conception, Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and pronounced the blessing, "Blessed are you among women." She remained in seclusion for five months after conceiving, and her son John would become the forerunner who prepared the way for Jesus.
