Elisheba

Elisheba, daughter of Amminadab and sister of Naashon, was the wife of Aaron the high priest and thus the foundational matriarch of the entire Aaronic priesthood. Her name, meaning God is an oath or God my swearing, is the Hebrew equivalent of Elisabeth, and the same name reappears in the New Testament for the mother of John the Baptist. Through Aaron she became the mother of Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.

Elisheba stands at the intersection of two great Israelite tribal genealogies: her brother Naashon was the prince of Judah during the wilderness wandering, and her husband Aaron was the brother of Moses and the founder of Israel's priestly order. The concise reference to her in Exodus 6:23 contains unusual genealogical detail for a woman, suggesting that the narrator wished to mark the honor of her lineage and the importance of her priestly descendants.
