Emmor
Name meaning: "an ass; clay; dirt"
Emmor is the Greek New Testament form (Acts 7:16) of the Hebrew Hamor, the Hivite prince and father of Shechem who negotiated with Jacob's sons after his son Shechem violated Dinah. The name means an ass in Hebrew, a detail that some commentators regard as a reflection on his character or as a livestock-related family name common among Canaanite traders. Stephen's speech in Acts references the purchase of the tomb at Shechem from the sons of Emmor (Hamor), summarizing the patriarchal narratives in compressed form.
The reference in Acts 7:16 presents a condensed account that combines details from different burial traditions—Jacob's burial at Machpelah (Genesis 50) and the burial of Joseph's bones at Shechem (Joshua 24:32)—suggesting Stephen was drawing on a tradition of compressed genealogical summary familiar in the synagogue. Hamor/Emmor himself is the figure who negotiated the Shechemite males' agreement to be circumcised in exchange for intermarriage, a condition exploited by Simeon and Levi in the massacre that followed.
