En-dor

En-dor (fountain of Dor or spring of the dwelling) was a town on the northern slope of the hill of Moreh in the territory of Issachar, allocated to the half-tribe of Manasseh. Its most prominent biblical appearance is as the home of the woman who was a medium or witch, whom Saul consulted on the eve of his final battle with the Philistines at Jezreel. Disguising himself and approaching her by night, Saul asked her to call up the spirit of Samuel, receiving instead a terrifying prophecy of his own death.

Psalm 83:10 also mentions En-dor as the location where Jabin and Sisera were destroyed, identifying it with the battlefield of the Kishon where Deborah and Barak defeated the Canaanite coalition. The modern identification is with the village of Endour (Indur) on the northern face of Little Hermon, roughly four miles from the spring of Jezreel. The site sits in the fertile Jezreel valley, explaining its repeated association with military campaigns that converged on that strategically critical plain.
