Enos

Enos (Hebrew ʾĕnôsh, meaning man or mortal) was the son of Seth and grandson of Adam, the third generation of humanity in the Sethite line. He is notable in Genesis 4:26 for being the generation in whose time men began to call upon the name of the LORD—a statement the biblical text presents as the beginning of formal, public worship. Whether this marks the inauguration of corporate prayer, liturgical invocation, or the designation of God by his personal name YHWH has been variously interpreted.

Enos lived 905 years according to the Masoretic text, fathering Cainan at age ninety. He appears in the genealogies of both Chronicles and Luke's gospel in the line from Adam to Jesus. Jewish tradition and rabbinic commentary sometimes read the Genesis 4:26 note as a transitional point distinguishing the period before public religion from the subsequent age of covenant worship, though the passage is susceptible to multiple interpretations depending on how one renders the Hebrew hûḥal (began, or was profaned).
