Ensign

An ensign in the biblical world was a visible signal or standard used to rally troops, mark tribal identity, or call nations to attention. The Hebrew terms nēs (standard, signal), degel (banner, standard), and ʾôth (sign) overlap in meaning and usage. Numbers 2 describes each of the four divisions of Israel's wilderness camp as having its own standard (degel), around which the designated tribes assembled—a military ordering of the covenant community.

The prophetic literature employs the ensign as a powerful metaphor. Isaiah 11:10 describes the root of Jesse standing as an ensign for the peoples, to which the Gentile nations would rally, and Isaiah 49:22 pictures God lifting a standard to summon the nations to carry Israel's exiles home. The lifting of an ensign on a mountain (Isaiah 13:2; 18:3) was a signal visible for long distances, serving as a communication technology for mustering armies or announcing judgment. In Christian interpretation the ensign of Jesse has been read as a prophecy of Christ as the gathering point for all nations.
