Ephrathite

Ephrathite is a gentillic term used in the Old Testament in two distinct senses. In the books of Samuel and Judges it refers to a native of Ephrath (Bethlehem) in Judah: Jesse, David's father, is called an Ephrathite of Bethlehem in Judah (1 Samuel 17:12), and the family of Elimelech in Ruth similarly belongs to this Bethlehemite clan. The term thus connects the Davidic line explicitly to its Bethlehemite origins.

Separately, in 1 Samuel 1:1, Elkanah the father of Samuel is described as an Ephrathite of Ramathaim-zophim in Mount Ephraim, suggesting the term could also denote a member of an Ephraimite clan called Ephrathites—a sub-group of the tribe of Ephraim. A similar usage appears in Judges 12:5, where certain Gileadites distinguish themselves from Ephrathites in a confrontation at the Jordan ford. The ambiguity reflects the overlapping usage of eponymic tribal and geographic names in biblical Hebrew, where the same gentillic could derive from different ancestral or geographic referents.
