Eshtemoa

Eshtemoa (meaning the bosom of a woman or obedience) was a Levitical city in the hill country of Judah, assigned to the Kohathite Levites from the territory of Judah (Joshua 21:14; 1 Chronicles 6:57). It is listed among the cities of Judah in the Shephelah (Joshua 15:50) and was one of the towns to which David sent spoil after his victory over the Amalekites during his time at Ziklag (1 Samuel 30:28). The site is generally identified with modern es-Samu, a village about nine miles south of Hebron. The name was also borne by a man, a descendant of Judah through the line of Caleb (1 Chronicles 4:17, 19).
