Eternal Death

Eternal death in Scripture designates the final, irreversible judgment of the unrepentant — the ultimate consequence of sin and the antithesis of eternal life. It is variously described as everlasting punishment (Matthew 25:46), eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels (Matthew 25:41), everlasting destruction away from the presence of the Lord (2 Thessalonians 1:9), the second death (Revelation 20:14; 21:8), and eternal judgment (Hebrews 6:2). The phrase "eternal" (aiōnios) modifies both "life" and "punishment" in Matthew 25:46 with identical grammatical force, establishing their parallel durations. Eternal death is thus not annihilation but ongoing existence in separation from the life of God — the ultimate fulfillment of sin's logic of choosing self over God. Its reality is one of Scripture's most sobering and consistently repeated warnings.
