Example

Concept

Example in Scripture functions both as a pattern to follow and as a warning to avoid. Christ set the supreme positive example: "I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you" (John 13:15), said as he washed the disciples' feet. Paul repeatedly invites imitation of his own conduct as it reflects Christ (Philippians 3:17; 2 Thessalonians 3:9; 1 Corinthians 11:1), and calls Timothy and Titus to be examples to their congregations in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity (1 Timothy 4:12; Titus 2:7). Peter urges elders to serve not for gain but as examples to the flock (1 Peter 5:3). The negative use is equally prominent: Israel's wilderness failures serve as examples of what to avoid (1 Corinthians 10:11), and Peter describes the punishment of Sodom and Gomorrah as "an example" of the judgment coming upon the ungodly (2 Peter 2:6).
