Eye

Eye in Scripture functions both as the literal organ of vision and as a rich metaphor for moral perception, desire, spiritual illumination, and divine oversight. The "eye of the LORD" is upon those who fear him (Psalm 33:18; 34:15), expressing his omniscient watchful care. In wisdom literature, the eye that sees and the ear that hears are both made by the LORD (Proverbs 20:12). Jesus teaches that the eye is the lamp of the body: if the eye is healthy (single, generous), the body is full of light; if the eye is evil (envious, stingy), the body is full of darkness (Matthew 6:22–23). The command not to let the eye spare in executing God's judgment (Deuteronomy 7:16; 19:13) expresses the demand for wholehearted covenant obedience. In Numbers 11:7 manna is compared in appearance to the eye of bdellium. Paul prays for the eyes of the understanding to be enlightened (Ephesians 1:18).
