Ezel

Ezel (meaning going abroad or walk) was a stone or landmark near Gibeah used as a secret meeting point and signal location in the arrangement between David and Jonathan. At Ezel, Jonathan was to shoot arrows to signal whether it was safe for David to return to Saul's court (1 Samuel 20:19). The name may refer to a particular rock formation serving as a recognized landmark in the area. The entire account of the signal system at Ezel reflects the deep covenant friendship between David and Jonathan and their ingenious means of communicating under dangerous conditions. The stone is mentioned only in this single narrative and has not been identified with a modern site.
